Does Heathrow Airport Have A Smoking Area? You Need To Know

London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs. For passengers with long layovers or those preparing for long-haul international flights, a frequent inquiry is: Does Heathrow Airport have a smoking area?

Strict Airside Non-Smoking Policy

The clear and vital rule to know: Once you pass through security at Heathrow Airport, there are NO smoking areas whatsoever.

Heathrow Airport enforces a strict smoke-free environment across all indoor areas. Unlike some international airports that offer ventilated smoking lounges past passport control, Heathrow has completely eliminated airside smoking facilities in Terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Electronic Cigarettes and Vaping

Heathrow treats e-cigarettes, vapes, and heated tobacco products under the exact same regulations as traditional tobacco cigarettes. You cannot vape or use e-cigarettes anywhere inside the terminals once you have cleared security.

Designated Landside Smoking Areas

If you need to smoke before your flight, you must do so outside the terminal buildings before passing through security (landside). Designated smoking zones with ashtrays are located on the terminal forecourts:

• Terminal 2: Designated outdoor areas on both the Departures and Arrivals forecourts.
• Terminal 3: Outside the main entrance building at street level.
• Terminal 4: Marked areas outside the Departures and Arrivals levels.
• Terminal 5: Clearly marked outdoor zones along the covered terminal roadway outside Departures and Arrivals.

Advice for Connecting Passengers

If you have an international connection at Heathrow and wish to smoke, you would be required to officially enter the UK (clearing UK Border Control and Customs), exit the terminal to smoke outside, and then queue to clear security all over again. In most cases, this takes between 1.5 to 2.5 hours and is strongly discouraged unless you have an exceptionally long layover.
